Weekend Golf Recap: Team Golf

McIlroy & Lowry Win Zurich Classic In Playoff

Rory McIlroy and Shane Lowry clinched the Zurich Classic of New Orleans in a playoff finale on Sunday.

The pair outlasted Chad Ramey and Martin Trainer, securing victory with a par on the first playoff hole when Trainer's 6-foot putt for par missed the mark.

This tournament marked McIlroy's first appearance at the Zurich Classic, where he added a 25th PGA Tour title to his impressive resume and notched his first win of the season.

Meanwhile, Lowry celebrated his third PGA Tour victory.

After watching Trainer’s putt go by the hole, Lowry hoisted McIlroy in a victorious bear hug, signaling the start of the festivities, which ended up with the two of them on stage singing a rendition of Journey’s “Don’t Stop Believing’”.

Brendan Steele Wins LIV Adelaide

Brendan Steele, a three-time PGA Tour victor, narrowly edged out Louis Oosthuizen to claim the title at the LIV Golf Adelaide event held at The Grange Golf Club, winning by a single stroke.

The 41-year-old Steele fired off a final round 68 on Sunday, culminating in a 54-hole total of 18-under 198, marking his first triumph since his 2017 victory at the Safeway Open on the PGA Tour.

Yet, probably the biggest takeaway from LIV’s biggest event is that Australians have been totally ignored by the PGA Tour and have been starved for golf.

No, it’s not anywhere near the size and scope of the WM Open, which sees 700,000+ fans attend (Adelaide saw about 100k) but you can’t deny that these ozzies are having a blast down there.

How has the Tour overlooked Australia for so long?

Shots Heard Round The World

Shunning Rory Would Represent Epic Embarrassment For PGA Tour

“A Monday morning conference call will determine whether or not McIlroy will make a return to the PGA Tour’s policy board and become a director of the recently established PGA Tour Enterprises.

This vote should have taken place on Wednesday. It is a telling indicator of the corporate muddle that McIlroy – not the most famous individual in golf but surely the most influential – was not immediately welcomed with open arms.

It is faintly ludicrous that the world No 2 and a proper needle-mover in golf has to hang around and audition for acceptance.

The only assumption to be drawn from the needless delay is that there are those who are hardly impressed by McIlroy stepping back into prominence. The Northern Irishman has been candid about his desire for a global game, where the best play the best in all corners of the globe. If top-level golf was created today, this is precisely the model that would be followed. Yet for too long – and still now – people involved in the PGA Tour are obsessed only by the PGA Tour.”

Shanks Says: If you’re the type that’s been following all of the LIV vs. PGA Tour drama, this article will provide some insights for you. Surely, they can’t be dumb enough to deny him a board seat & essentially hand him to LIV, right?
