Round 1 Update, Upper Deck, LIV Greenbrier, and more golf news.
Good Afternoon. Welcome to Shanks. If you scroll to the bottom of today’s newsletter, we have a one question poll for you to answer. You don’t get any presents for answering it, but technically it could make you money.
Did You Know? Sergio Garcia has the most points of any individual in Ryder Cup history and Phil Mickelson has the most appearances.
Here's what we've got for ya today:

Quick Update: Wyndham Championship
Today is the final cut of the regular season and we’ve got some updates on the playoff bubble. Remember, unlike previous years where the top 125 qualified, only the top 70 get in this year.
Round 1 Recap
The first round saw players deal with some wet weather in the early part of the day, leading to really soft conditions as the day went on. Overall, the scoring was pretty low.
The projected cutline is -1.
Russell Henley (-8): You may or may not remember that in 2021, Russell Henley started the final round with a 3 shot lead and ended up missing out on six-man playoff by a single stroke. He says he’s better for the experience. Let’s see if he can hang on this time.
Adam Scott (-5): Solid opening round of -5 for our outright pick from Wednesday. He finished 3-off the lead and is currently projected inside the top 70 for the playoffs if he can keep it up.
Justin Thomas(E): An even-par first round isn’t great when the projected cut is -1. JT is going to have to find another gear in round two to have a chance at the playoffs.
JT Poston (-5): JT the Postman loves him some Sedgefield CC. Our pre-tournament top ten pick has a solid chance of paying out.
Andrew Svensson (-7): Bogey free and seven under for the first round, and a scorching start to his second round this morning. The Canadian is currently in the lead as we write.
Shane Lowry (-2): Another former major champion on the playoff bubble.
The Scott/Lowry/Thomas group go off at 1pm and will be one to watch this afternoon.
💰 Shanks Picks 💰
Adam Scott (Outright), JT Poston (Top 10) and Billy Horschel (Top 20) are all still alive and well.
Denny McCarthy (Top 5, Make The Cut) looks unlikely to make the cut.
Play Golf at Your Favorite Stadium
Upper Deck Golf does this fun thing where they basically set up Top Golf inside of your favorite baseball stadiums. Then you go, eat, drink, whack some balls, and explore the stadium. Pretty cool.
From their site: Upper Deck Golf is a truly unique golfing experience inside the most legendary stadiums and ballparks across the country! Enjoy an unforgettable experience while hitting tee shots from the upper deck throughout the stadium, down to custom greens on the field below. You'll start and end your round at the clubhouse festival inside the stadium with great music, cold beers, food and multiple golfing challenges for you and your friends.
Golf Shots Heard Round The World
Not Great: Despite being toward the top of the leaderboard after the first round… Matt Wallace said he does not like Sedgefield CC.
LIV Greenbrier Preview
Today marks the start of the 10th event for LIV Golf so we’re excited to see these guys out there but also concerned they might be swinging off some rust. We’re now at a little over halfway through the LIV Golf Tour for 2023 so heaps of golfers will be looking to shoot low in hopes that their teams can make a playoff push. But also winning the individual event is cool.
🚩 Location: The Old White at The Greenbrier
💰 Purse: Same as every event; $25 million ($20 million individual, $5 million team)
👀 How to Watch: Friday: 1-6 p.m. (CW App) | Saturday & Sunday: 1-6 p.m. (CW Network & App)
LIV Broadcaster picks are as follows… (and if you’re a gonna bet, you might want to take notes):
Troy Mullins: Patrick Reed (Individual) & 4Aces (Team)
David Feherty: Bryson DeChambeau (Individual) & RangeGoats (Team)
Arlo White: Patrick Reed (Individual) & 4Aces (Team)
Su-Ann Heng: Cam Smith (Individual and B2B) & Ripper (Team)
Dom Boulet: Joaquin Niemann (Individual) & Torque (Team)
Jerry Foltz: Patrick Reed (Individual) & Majesticks (Team)
Interesting to see how many people are high on Patrick Reed, and a bit of a bummer. We never forget. Note how you aren’t seeing anybody pick Brooks Koepka or his team (Smash) and that could likely be because he and his wife just welcomed their first child this week, so it’s expected he’s a bit distracted!
