Quick Update: The American Express

Forty-eight-year-old Charley Hoffman is tied for the lead with Rico Hoey after two rounds at the AmEx, with both sitting at 16-under.

With the PGA Tour soon reducing the number of available tour cards to just 100, it will become increasingly rare to see a 48-year-old competing, let alone leading a tournament.

“The competition is fun,” Hoffman said. “I like walking down the fairways, and guys are like, ‘How old are you?’ I tell them, ‘I’m 48,’ and they sort of give me a look, like, ‘What? You’re 48 and still out here playing?’ In this day and age, with the shift to just 100 players, guys playing at 48 on the PGA Tour is becoming a thing of the past. I don’t think you’re going to see it much longer. But I’m going to battle out here as long as I can.”

Does the old dog still have enough gas in the tank to hold on?

More Notes From The Amex:

  • Rickie Fowler shot a 10-under 62 yesterday, putting him 3 off the lead and tied with Justin Thomas and defending champ Nick Taylor at -13.

  • Patrick Cantlay, Will Zalatoris, and Doug Ghim are at -12.

  • One of our picks, JT Poston, was the first round leader at -10, but shot four over in the 2nd round. If you bet a golfer to win and they are the first round leader, your bet is cooked, more than likely.

  • 17-year-old Blades Brown almost nabbed the scoring record yesterday.
