This weekend was the perfect example of the Spiethian Rollercoaster. He was the first-round leader; he shot -6 in the first two rounds, and then he proceeded to play the next two rounds at +2.
He finished 2 strokes outside the Top 50, and his season is over.
He hasn’t won on TOUR since 2022, and he had zero Top 10’s this season.
He remains the most confounding golfer on the planet.

After three straight weeks with an American winner under the age of 25, the streak has been broken by wily old veteran Scottie Scheffler, who recently turned 30.
Is he old enough that we can call his performance this weekend “vintage Scheffler?” no, of course not, but what we saw this weekend reminds us all that Scottie has a different gear than everyone else.
There are, essentially, two versions of Scottie Scheffler: good and historically good.
The historically good version of Scottie, is what we saw last year. 6 wins, 2 Majors, and a 4th straight Player Of The Year award.
The good version of Scottie is what we’ve seen this year:
2 wins, 12 Top Ten’s, 5 runner ups, leads the TOUR in scoring average, leads the TOUR in birdie average, and you get the point - the “good version” of Scottie is still better than pretty much everyone else, and his ceiling is “historically good”.
The only other golfer on the planet that you can argue has as high of a ceiling as Scottie Scheffler, is Rory McIlroy, who finished 66th in a field of 70 this week, something I don’t believe Scottie Scheffler is even capable of doing.
Even crazy bad breaks, which could be the difference in winning & losing for mere mortals, don’t effect Scottie the same way. He won by a margin of 8 strokes over the 2nd place finisher Si Woo Kim.
In terms of margin of victory, Scottie now has 6 career wins of 5+ strokes, he is second only to Tiger Woods in that category.
And I think he plays against much stronger fields than Tiger had to in his prime.
