RBC Heritage Update, Rory Owes 3 Milly, and Weed.

Plus a little hint of animal sacrifice.

A happy Friday to you and welcome to Caddyshanks, the most casual golf newsletter in the world. In fact, we hope you're out on the course today instead of reading this thing.

Here's what we've got today:

  • Update: RBC Heritage

  • John Daly + 420 + Shooter McGavin

  • Golf Shots Heard Round The World

  • For The Group Chat

  • Don't Be That Guy

  • Golf Thing We'd Buy If We Weren't Broke

Update: RBC Heritage

Viktor Hovland drove to Hilton Head as soon as The Masters wrapped up. He was ready to put his T7 finish behind him and carry a little positive momentum to Harbour Town.

So, he showed up to the RBC Heritage and threw darts all day long for an opening round -7. Talk about feeling refreshed.

He hit 9 of his approach shots to within 20 feet, and got up and down 4 other times, and he ended up with seven birdies on the day.

RBC Heritage Leaderboard

“I'm a big fan of Pete Dye golf courses,” Hovland said to Golf Digest. “I think they're just awesome. It’s a tree-lined golf course and pretty narrow so I can hit this drive where I tee down, grip it down a little bit, and just hit a low bullet. It's hard for me to hit a disastrous shot with that shot.”

OH, if only it were that easy for the rest of us.

What about everyone else?

There was a rain delay, so some guys (like Aaron Rai and Jimmy Walker) are finishing their first rounds early Friday morning.

Sitting behind Hovland is Brian Harman -6. Harman also moved on from Augusta quickly, but in a slightly different way than Hovland.

He went to his farm in South Georgia.

“I went and I killed a pig Friday night at my farm, and I killed a turkey Saturday morning. I didn’t hit any balls until I got here Tuesday,” Harman said.

Whom among us hasn't wanted to sacrifice an animal or family pet in exchange for golf skills? Whom among us?! Totally normal.

Anyway, there are plenty of big names in the hunt this weekend, even if they aren't all on top of the leaderboard after round one.

Spieth, Scheffler, Rose, and fan favorite Joel Dahmen are all sitting at -5.

Remember earlier in the week when we picked Cam Young to win? Well, he didn't get off to a great start, but he did hit this shot yesterday.

John Daly and Shooter McGavin Marijuana Golf Event

Gaylord, Michigan is quite the location name for such an event.

It’s also the place that has recently voted against the approval for a license to host a marijuana and golf event that was to feature actor Christopher McDonald (who played antagonist, Shooter McGavin, in the movie “Happy Gilmore”) and the one and only Diet Coke and cigarettes king, John Daly.

517 Golf, a Michigan social media and marketing company, are the genius masterminds behind this absolutely stellar idea. Their plan was to host a celebrity golf outing on Aug. 28-29 at the Otsego Resort that allowed the sale and consumption of cannabis and related products on the resort grounds. In an attempt to gain approval , they even adjusted the proposal to eliminate the sale of pot and just permit the consumption of marijuana in a designated area on the resort property.

But, that got shot down faster than a balloon over the US. And now that it’s sans stoners, it’s not clear if this event will even take place at all. Tokem if you gotem.

Golf Shots Heard Round Augusta

Big Fine: Rory is being fined 3M for missing the RBC Heritage.

Tiger To Miss PGA: Rumor has it we won't see Tiger again until the US Open in LA.

What should we do about slow play? A piece from No Laying Up

Twitter Beef: We've got a good ole fashioned twitter beef brewing between Barstool and Golf Digest. Golf twitter is so toxic!

Golf Thing We'd Buy If We Weren't Broke

That John Daly and Shooter McGavin weed + golf story above gave me the munchies. So while I was crushing a bag of Cool Ranch Doritos, perusing the internet, I came across this beauty.

For the appropriate price of $420, you could own this limited edition “Never Miss” blue putter from marijuanagolf.com. It’s literally all blue with “Marijuana Golf – Hit The Green” written on the bottom and tastefully places marijuana leaves.

Maybe I was high when I wrote this, but I just noticed that it says “Out of Stock”. Oh well!

That's all folks! See you Monday, go low this weekend.
