RBC Heritage: News, odds, and our picks.

Cool golf data, Gucci Balls, and more.

Good Afternoon. Welcome to Shanks. We're like a cool breeze on a hot day: refreshing

Here's what we've got for ya today:

  • Doin Lines: RBC Heritage

  • Invest in a Golfer

  • Golf Shots Heard Round The World

  • For The Group Chat

  • Golf Thing We'd Buy If We Weren't Broke

Doin Lines: RBC Heritage

A week after The Masters and we've got ourselves a high-quality designated event!

You love to see it.

If you've been asleep at the wheel, designated events mean bigger purses, and more of the top players have to attend. Which means better golf. Let's dive in.

đźš© Location: Harbour Town, South Carolina

đź’° Purse: $20M ($3.6M to the winner)

đź‘‘ Previous Winner: Jordan Spieth

⛳️ Field: 143 Golfers

đź‘€ Watch On: ESPN+ and Golf Channel

Let's Gamble

Harbour Town is one of those pesky lil' courses (7100 yds) that give short hitters a fighting chance. It has some of the smallest greens on the entire tour as well, so the onus is on the players to hit accurate approach shots and scramble well when they don't.

If you've played well here in the past (looking at you Webb Simpson and Matt Kuchar) typically, you'll play well in the future, but because there is more talent in the field this year than any before - we're going to totally disregard that this week.

We're going to factor in a little SG APP Data and Strokes Gained @ Pete Dye Courses Data into our picks this week. via Action Network

Total SG: Approach Over Past 24 Rounds

  1. Tom Hoge (+28.9)

  2. Max Homa (+27.6)

  3. Tony Finau (+25.3)

  4. Scottie Scheffler (+25.2)

  5. Collin Morikawa (+24.9)

SG: TOT Pete Dye per round over past 24 rounds:

  1. Shane Lowry (+2.0)

  2. Corey Conners (+1.8)

  3. Scottie Scheffler (+1.8)

  4. Tyrrell Hatton (+1.7)

  5. Sungjae Im (+1.7)

Outright Winners:

Shane Lowry has been playing good golf (T16 at The Masters) and plays well at Pete Dye courses. +3000

Justin Thomas didn't make the cut at The Masters, similar to Spieth last year. Spieth went on to win this event & JT could do the same. +2800

Scottie Chef is like the golf data king in 2023. +750

Top Ten:

Tyrrell Hatton stormed his way to a 2nd place finish the last time he was on a Pete Dye Course (TPC Sawgrass) +333

Corey Conners +400

Tom Hoge +750

Break Through: Cam Young +2000 with Webb Simpsons former caddie Paul Tesori on the bag. He's bound to break through eventually. Is this the week?

Golfers Get a Kickstarter

Some of you are like, “invest in a golfer, you mean like gambling?” And to that, I say, yea kinda!

Through a new company called Carry, founded by Goldman Sachs veteran Donnie Dotson, you can now invest in "early-stage" pro golfers and share in their journeys to the top!

To quote directly from the company’s website "The financial hurdle that comes with grinding it out on the Korn Ferry Tour and mini-tours is the biggest challenge for golfers trying to reach the PGA Tour.” This is amazing, and a super wholesome way to help aspiring pros focus on their craft and compete, rather than having to play AND get loans or other part time jobs to get by.

And if this wholesome investment opportunity wasn’t enough to make you throw up yet, Carry is contributing 5% of net revenues to organizations that aid economically disadvantaged youth to participate in recreational athletic programs.

Just one more quick joke about Patrick Cantlay and his pace of play.

Golf Thing We'd Buy If We Weren't Broke

I think the most heinous thing about this adidas X Gucci golf ball case isn’t even the $5,100 pricetag. It’s the fact that I can only fit 4 in there. Since when do I need only 4? Put me on a wide open fairway that’s straight down the middle and at least 2 of those bad boys are 45 yards into the trees.

Yeah so, anyway, there it is. A $5k golf ball case that’s just a purse basically. It comes in green or blue. It’s insane, stupid, and insanely stupid but I would like 1 in each color please.

That's all folks! See you Friday!
