U.S. Open: Who Can Catch Wyndham?

Wyndham Clark is on fire after 36 holes at Shinnecock.

His -7 on the scorecard is the lowest in Shinnecock U.S. Open history, and he’s four shots clear of the group of four guys tied for 2nd place. (Xander Schauffele, Matt Fitzpatrick, Sam Stevens, and Tom Kim)

He has played stellar golf through two rounds, gaining a whopping 12.53 strokes on the field. He’s gained strokes putting in every round for four straight tournaments.

And he still may not win.

Because it’s golf, and golf doesn’t care what you did yesterday.

And because Shinnecock still has a few tricks up it’s sleeve.

Yes, it’s played softer than it ever has in history. There are 10 players under par at the halfway mark.

Back in 2018, there was only one, but they were clearly concerned about the wind in the first two rounds, and kept the green speeds at about 10.5 on the stimp.

As Rory McIlroy said after the 2nd round “The weather has been perfect. They've got everything back on track, so I'd say people should expect the Shinnecock they've gotten to know over the past couple of decades.”

We hope he’s right.
