Preview & Picks: The Travelers Championship

Oakmont was a grind. A missed fairway was basically an auto-bogey.
The Travelers this week?
A much friendlier setup. And something tells us the TOUR guys are gonna be just fine with that.
TPC River Highlands clocks in just under 6,900 yards - not long by today’s standards - but it’s tight and demands accuracy. Still, let’s not oversell the challenge. Winning scores have hovered around 20-under. It’s a birdie-fest.
Scottie won it last year in a playoff over Tom Kim after both finished at 22-under.
So yeah, expect lower scores, happier golfers, and a whole lot more red numbers on the board.
Scottie had a thoughtful answer this morning about whether courses like this are too easy. Worth a listen.
Are PGA Tour courses too easy?
Scottie Scheffler explains what a “fair test” looks like in the eyes of Tour players and why he thinks it’s weird golf is looked at differently than other pro sports.

Shanks Picks

Oakmont crushed the golfers and our card last week. Did anyone out there pick JJ Spaun?
Winner: Scottie Scheffler +300: We will stop picking Scottie when he’s no longer the best player in the world. Maybe about 10 years from now?
Winner: Viktor Hovland +3000: Vik was awesome last week, but his putter let him down. The test on the greens won’t be nearly as tough at The Travelers.
Winner: Brian Harman +8000: Brian Harman loves TPC River Highlands. He’s finished Top 10 here four years in a row. The odds are long enough to make you raise an eyebrow though, so he may be a safer Top 10 play, where he is +470 incl ties on Fanduel.
Top Twenty: Cameron Young +130: Recent form pick. He’s been knocking on the door of his first PGA Tour Victory, but it just won’t open. Top Twenty feels safe.
Top Twenty: Jason Day +160: Jason Day has the game to succeed at TPC River Highlands and he played pretty well at Oakmont last week, finishing T23.
Top Twenty: Luke Clanton +210: While he only made his professional debut at the Canadian Open a few weeks ago, the kid can flat out play. He may not be ready to win a signature event just yet, but look for him to start hanging around.
