Preview & Picks: 3M Open

This week, the TOUR is heading from the majestic coast of Northern Ireland to Blaine, Minnesota.

From wonderful links golf at Royal Portrush to the landlocked TPC Twin Cities.

You get the point. Major season is officially over. There’s just 260 days until The Masters, for those counting at home.

We’re in the summer doldrums for the next two weeks, first with the 3M Open and then next week with the illustrious Wyndham Championship.

After that, the 70 best on TOUR are all back in action for the Fedex Cup playoffs, which finally got rid of “starting strokes” as part of it’s format. So, there’s at least something to look forward to between now and the Ryder Cup.

Okay, back to Blaine.

The average winning score at TPC Twin Cities has been around 19-under par, so we are in birdie-fest territory here.

Like a lot of TPC courses, it sets up well for bombers. Jhonattan Vegas won last year at 17-under and previous editions have seen Tony Finau and Cameron Champ (both bombers) in the winners circle.

There are some bigger names in the field this week - Sam Burns, Wyndham Clark, Jake Knapp, Tony Finau, Adam Scott, Rickie Fowler, and Max Homa are all teeing it up.

Let’s see if we can pick a winner this week.

Shanks Picks

After nailing 6 outrights in the first half of the season, we’ve gone ice cold. Maybe this is the week we get back on track.

Winner: Sam Burns +1800: Yes, it’s a bombers course, but you’ve still gotta make your putts to win a birdie-fest. Burns is the best putter in the field this year.

Winner: Tony Finau +4000: When was the last time Tony Finau won? He’s due.

Winner: Max Homa +4500: It hasn’t been a great year for Max Homa, but his form has started to take a turn for the better.

Top Twenty: Keith Mitchell +210: Remember when Cashmere Keith was the first round leader at like, five straight events earlier this year?

Top Twenty: Haotong Li +230: You may remember that he was paired with Scottie Scheffler last week, but he’s also the #1 ranked player on the DP World Tour this year and in line to get his TOUR card.

Top Twenty: Beau Hossler +270: Welcome to the Beau show, baby!
