Preview & Picks: 153rd Open Championship

The final major of the season is here.
That fact is both exciting and depressing, because once it’s over we’ve got to wait 9 more months for another major.
So, let’s enjoy the hell out of the next few days of waking up early and watching links golf on a wonderful course.
Round 1 at Royal Portrush in Northern Ireland begins at 1:35AM ET on Thursday.
The favorites are, as usual, Scottie Scheffler & Rory McIlroy. Jon Rahm sits just behind them on the odds board.
Some notes…
8 of the last 10 winners of The Open had already won at least once that season.
8 of the last 10 winners had also finished Top 10 at least once at The Open.
As always, weather will be a factor. The highs will be in the 60’s, it’s going to be wet, but the wind, or lack of it, will make the biggest impact.
As of Wednesday morning, they are not predicting wind greater than 15-20 MPH on any of the tournament days, but if there’s any place where weather predictions are difficult - it’s off the coast of Northern Ireland.

Shanks Picks

Who will be drinking from the Claret Jug this time around?
Winner: Tommy Fleetwood +2600: Tommy Lad is simply way overdue, plus he’s not on U.S. soil so there’s a real chance he can win.
Winner: Viktor Hovland +3000: Viktor Hovland is possibly the best young player to not win a major yet, he’s gotta win one sooner or later right?
Winner: Sepp Straka +5000: Look, it’s been a great year for Sepp, but he’s MC in all three majors. Looking for a positive reversion here.
Top Twenty: Jordan Spieth +200: Fun fact - nobody has gained more strokes in The Open over the last ten years than Jordan Spieth.
Top Twenty: Patrick Reed +210: Expect Captain America to leave it all on the course this week as he makes his bid for a Ryder Cup spot.
Top Twenty: Ryan Fox +250: Ryan Fox has one twice this year and he got his start on the DP World Tour, this feels like good value.
