Preview & Picks: Sony Open

It’s officially golf season and it could be a special one - big changes are on the way for pro golf.

Like most years, this season kicks off in Hawaii, although instead of the first tournament being The Sentry, this year it’s the Sony Open. The Sentry was cancelled due drought conditions and water restrictions on Maui.

So, the PGA TOUR decided to delay the start of it’s season by a week and island hop on over to Oahu to play the Sony Open at Wai’alea Country Club. That’s where the changes really begin.

This is the 61st time they’ve played at Wai’alea and there’s a decent chance it could be the last…

Yes, the days of 38 PGA TOUR events, four majors, and trips to Hawaii may be coming to an end in 2027.

Rumors coming out of Ponte Vedra indicate that the PGA TOUR will be focused on “parity, scarcity and simplicity,” which means reducing the amount of events from 38 to about 25 that are played on the best stages with the best fields and in the biggest markets. They also won’t start the season until after the Superbowl.

Fortunately, that’s next years problem.

As for this year, it’s business as usual, and we will break down every event and send out our picks, but with a twist.

This year, we will be featuring Keith Stewart’s (a professional bettor) picks alongside our own.

Keith Stewart’s Picks

Chris Kirk (+4500)

Here’s the veteran play. Chris Kirk has won in Hawaii (The Sentry) and has two top-three finishes at Wai’alae over the past five years. A smooth right-to-left ball flight off the tee puts Kirk in a strong position to go low. An excellent approach player with his scoring irons, Chris has a couple of career wins on coastal Bermudagrass.

John Keefer (+7000)

I walked with John Keefer at the RSM Classic. A sweet draw off the tee, and an excellent putter give me every indication that this rookie can continue with his excellent scoring ways. Keefer is ranked first in the field in BoB%, and eighth in Bogey Avoidance. One of the best putters in the field, this rookie is going to contend early and often this season.

Caddyshanks Picks

Hideki Matsuyama +1800

Hideki’s game looked really strong the last time we saw him at the Hero World Challenge and he’s won at Wai’alea before, we like him to get off to a hot start before he wins at Riviera in a few weeks.

Aaron Rai +3500

Rai has the game to win at a course like Wai’alea, particularly because he ranks near the top of the field in SG: APP over the last 36 rounds. His history here isn’t great, but we like that to change this week. He’s a great course fit.
