Preview & Picks: RBC Canadian Open

You may not think of Canada as a “golf country”, but it certainly is for one week every year. That would be this week.

When native son Nick Taylor won the Canadian Open two years ago against Tommy Fleetwood in a playoff, it was electric.

Then, last year, Bobby Mac won with his dad on the bag. Tearjerker.

The point is - the Canadian Open has delivered some great moments the last couple of years. It’s sort of an underrated tournament.

Storylines…

Will a Canadian win again?

Corey Conners, Nick Taylor, and Taylor Pendrith are all in good enough form to bring home the Canadian bacon. Gotta think at least one of the three will be in contention come Sunday.

How about the top dogs?

Rory McIlroy is back in action as the favorite this week and Scottie Scheffler is taking the week off after his Memorial win. I should mention that Rory has won this event twice, in 2019 and 2022.

Ludvig Aberg is the second shortest odds in the field at +1400 - he made his professional debut at the Canadian Open two years ago and although his game has been in a weird spot this year, the course sets up well for him.

What about the young guns?

Speaking of debuts, Luke Clanton and Gordon Sargent are making their first professional starts this week.

Both are highly ranked players coming out of college and worth keeping an eye on.

Shanks Picks

We hit our 6th outright winner last week with Scottie Scheffler and another Top 20 with Rickie Fowler. This week, we’re keeping it simple and betting the hot hands.

Winner: Ludvig Aberg +1400. If there’s been a winning trend this year, it’s that the big names just keep taking home the trophies. He posted the 2nd lowest round of the day on Sunday at Muirfield, let’s see if he can ride that momentum.

Winner: Sam Burns +2800. This is a recent form pick. He’s finished Top 30 in five straight events including a T12 last week at The Memorial.

Winner: Sungjae Im +3500. Yeah, that’s gonna make it three recent form bets on one card. T16 last week at The Memorial and 100 Top 25 finishes in 197 starts for his career.

Top Twenty: Luke Clanton +150. We’re betting on the young buck. Last year, as an Amateur, he was the first since the 1950’s to have back to back Top 10 finishes.

Top Twenty: Cameron Young +200. Betting on Cameron Young never seems to work out, but he did just survive a 5 for 1 playoff to get into the US Open.

Top Twenty: Erik Van Rooyen +290. Not sure if you heard, but dude just destroyed the field at the U.S. Open Qualifier.

All odds for winners are from BetMGM and all odds for Top Twenty (including ties) are from Fanduel.
