Quick Recap: The Genesis Scottish Open

The Scottish Open has had some great finishes over the last few years. Xander Schauffele four years ago, Rory’s comeback win, Bobby Mac winning his national Open last year, and then a kid from New Jersey arriving on the scene yesterday.

It’s a damn good tournament.

Now, let’s talk about Chris Gotterup.

He played a few years of college golf at Rutgers, took his COVID year for a final season at Oklahoma, then grinded it out on the KFT for a couple years before getting his TOUR Card.

He got his first win as a TOUR rookie at the Myrtle Beach Classic, an opposite field event. Then just three Top-25 finishes the rest of the year.

This year he’s improved his approach play and notched 10 Top 25’s, but no wins.

Until yesterday, when the 25 year old found himself going head to head with Rory McIlroy on a links course in Scotland - and he beat him by two strokes.

There’s a certain level of poetic justice to be found there, because Rory is one of the biggest proponents of shrinking the amount of TOUR Cards available.

If Rory gets his way, that means we won’t have guys like Chris Gotterup fighting their way onto the TOUR - they’ll be squeezed out.

Moments like the one below are part of what makes golf great.
