Plus: Rai Almost Kills Spectator, Rory's Driver Issues, and More.
Good Morning. While you're killing time waiting for Round 3 of the PGA Championship, it’s a perfect chance to peek ahead to the U.S. Open.
Recently, a bunch of golf influencers tackled Oakmont under legit tournament conditions, and spoiler: it's brutal. Like, "forget breaking 100" brutal for us mere mortals.
If you haven't seen it yet, check out Bob Does Sports' video (below). Jump to the 24:00 mark, where they battle Oakmont’s 160-yard 6th hole—Fat Perez, a legit scratch golfer, gets absolutely humbled by that gnarly rough. (The same thing happens to the high handicappers multiple times throughout the video.)

Quick Update: PGA Championship

It’s been a weird start to the 2025 PGA Championship...
At times it’s felt backwards, almost as if you were watching an opposite field event.
First - here's a list of big-time names watching from the couch this weekend: Jordan Spieth, Shane Lowry, Sepp Straka, Justin Thomas, Ludvig Aberg, Hideki Matsuyama, Patrick Reed, Rickie Fowler, Min Woo Lee, Patrick Cantlay, Jason Day, Will Zalatoris, Cam Smith, Phil Mickelson, Brooks Koepka, Dustin Johnson, and Michael Block. Brutal cutline.
Rory McIlroy, Xander Schauffele, and Sergio Garcia just managed to sneak in at +1, making the cut on the number.
Meanwhile, leading the charge into Saturday is 40-year-old Jhonattan Vegas (-8). He backed up his 7-under opener with a steady 1-under round on Friday and heads into the weekend holding a two-shot lead over Matthieu Pavon, Matt Fitzpatrick, and Si Woo Kim (-6)
Scottie Scheffler and Max Homa are right in the mix at T5 (-5). History suggests Scottie could easily make his move from here - it’s just what he does. Vegas agrees, he’s still the favorite at +210.
Hanging around the -2 to -4 range are Jon Rahm, Tommy Fleetwood, Viktor Hovland, Bryson DeChambeau, Tony Finau, and Robert MacIntyre.
Plenty of firepower for a dramatic weekend, even if it didn’t look that way after the first round.
For Those Who Bet Rory McIlroy…
Rory McIlroy at Quail Hollow:
2010 Made cut on number at +1
Was 9 back of 40-something Billy Mayfair, won.
2025 Makes cut on number at +1
9 back of Vegas (age 40)...?
But also…what’s the deal with Rory’s driver?
If golf wants to run into the arms of gambling partners at every turn, this kind of info needs to be disclosed.
Rory has hit 10 of 27 fairways so far this week, which is 152nd in the field. He was one of two heavy favorites.

That dude almost lost his manhood!
Thing We’d Buy: West Texas
The fairways aren’t the prettiest, hell, neither are the greens.
Honestly, the sand traps might be the best thing on the course.
But the cold ones are plentiful, the mulligans even more plentiful. If you can’t cheat your way to a hole-in-one at West Texas Municipal, might be time for a new set of clubs. Just don’t expect to get ‘em at the pro shop.
