John Deere, LIV London, and Women's US Open Recaps
PGAT Board Member resigns, and more.
Good afternoon and welcome to Caddyshanks. We’ve got a lot of golf to cover today, so head over to the work bathroom and relax.
Here's what we've got for ya today:
Quick Recaps: John Deere, LIV London, Women’s US Open
Early Lines: Scottish Open
Golf Shots Heard Round The World
Board Member Resigns
Golf Thing We'd Buy If We Weren't Broke
Quick Recap: John Deere Classic
👑 Winner: Sepp Straka 1.58M
The Big Man!
There’s just something about big man golfers who have the finesse of a gazelle. Ernie Els, John Daly, Sepp Straka… you know the type.
Our Top 20 (+220) pick from last Wednesday went and won the whole thing.
He shot a 73 the first round, then followed up with rounds of 63,65, and a final round of 62.
Oh, and that 62 yesterday was dangerously close to being a 60. He made a double bogey on the final hole. Didn’t matter, nobody could catch the Austrian.
Has he earned himself European Ryder Cup status with this win?
Quick Recap: Women’s US Open
👑 Winner: Allisen Corpuz $2M
The “big names” in the women’s game were nowhere to be found come Sunday at Pebble Beach. No Nelly, No Rose, No Minjee Lee.
Just Allisen Corpuz, quietly and calmly going about her business en route to becoming the first woman to win a US Open at Pebble Beach.
“This was bigger than money; it was a chance at history. A chance to stand on the shoulders of the giants in the game who came before and claim the honor of being the first woman to win a major championship at Pebble Beach Golf Links, an American treasure that’s breathtaking in its beauty and brawn.”
Quick Recap: LIV London
👑 Winner: Cam Smith $2 Billion & Pet Tiger
Doesn’t it just feel nice to say? LIV LONDON! You sound like you’re from London! Please watch that clip, it’s hilarious.
You know what’s also nice? Getting to see my bruv, Cameron Smith, finally sealing a win this year on the LIV Tour going -15 under total across three days at Centurion Club. Sure, he’s a proper Australian bloke but who cares? He’s got swagger enough for a mullet AND a mustache even if it looks a bit rubbish. And what’s more, a win in England is sure to keep him motivated and confident at making a legitimate run at the Open Championship (also in England) starting July 20.
Anyone who was up super early to watch the LIV London event on Sunday presumably breathed a sigh of relief when they saw that Patrick Reed DIDN’T win, although he did come in at a tie for 2nd with Marc Leishman (-14). If you’re curious about the Patrick Reed hate, feel free to Google him. Or just watch this clip of Reed almost replacing a dude’s head with a ball. Brilliant!
Nothing special about the team aspect except that Cam Smith’s team (Ripper GC) actually took home 2nd place while Dustin Johnson’s team (4Aces; also Patrick Reed’s team) took 1st place. This win for Ripper GC wasn’t enough to get them into the overall top 5 mix at all, with 4Aces GC in 1st , Torque GC in 2nd , RangeGoats GC in 3rd , and Stinger GC in 4th , all very comfortably out in front of the team in 5th (Crushers GC). You can see overall team and individual standings here.
The LIV Tour will recommence on August 4th -6th at The Old White at The Greenbrier in West Virginia.

Winners Bag: What’s in the bag? Sepp Straka
The Yips: “It’s a new experience, and very difficult to deal with, when your putter has been the best part of your game your whole life, and you develop the yips… I always thought they were a myth, but THEY ARE REAL!! Been battling hard to figure out a way to get through them. Still time…”
PGAT Board-member Resigns
Rnadall Stephenson, former AT&T chairman and PGAT Boardmember has resigned from the board over the Saudi deal.
whoa @washingtonpost with a story on Randall Stephenson resigning from PGA Tour Policy Board. He objects to the framework deal with Saudi PIF, saying it "is not one that I can objectively evaluate or, in good conscience support." washingtonpost.com/sports/2023/07…

“I joined this board 12 years ago to serve the best players in the world and to expand the virtues of sportsmanship instilled through the game of golf,” wrote Stephenson, the former chairman and CEO of AT&T. “I hope, as this board moves forward, it will comprehensively rethink its governance model and keep its options open to evaluate alternative sources of capital beyond the current framework agreement.”
Early Lines: Scottish Open
The best players in the world are across the pond this week, getting used to the time difference and playing some golf ahead of The Open.
Previous Scottish Open Champion Min Woo Lee +3400 is looking tasty here.
Golf Thing We'd Buy If We Weren't Broke
This segment should be called “Things I Would Recommend You Buy If You Aren’t Broke” today because I own this thing, and I couldn’t recommend this more. I played at a (mostly) par-3 course this last Saturday and the tee box yardages were WILDLY off. If it weren’t for the Blue Tees Rangefinder (Series 3 Max), I would not have shot a +6 on the day, which I totally legitimately did! I mean, I’d have surely hit way over or way short multiple times on every green!
This rangefinder was the perfect addition to my bag, it’s accurate as hell (even with slope adjustments), it looks clean, I love the pulse vibration feedback, and the display is super easy to read. Right now, you can even get this on sale for $239.99 instead of $299.99. Check it out, I couldn’t recommend this rangefinder more. Oh my god, I sound like a car salesman. F***.
That's all folks! See you Wednesday we will make bets for the Scottish Open.
