Plus: How does Fedex Fall work?

Good afternoon! Welcome to Shanks. If you’re a Jets fan, we extend to you our deepest sympathies.

Trivia: Who called Jean Van De Velde an idiot on the final hole of the 1999 British open as the Frenchman was in the burn?

Answer Below.

Here's what we've got for ya today:

  • Doin Lines 2X: Fortinet and BMW Championships

  • How Does Fedex Fall Work, Anyway?

  • Shots Heard Round The World

  • Just Do It Already!

  • Thing We’d Buy If We Weren’t Broke

Doin Lines: Fortinet & BMW Championships

We’ve got two events to bet on this week and one is a bit more exciting than the other. Let’s dive in and make some cards for both.

Fortinet Championship

🚩 Location: Silverado Country Club

💰 Purse: $8.4M - $1.51M To First

👑 Previous Winner: Max Homa

👀 Watch On: Golf Channel & Peacock

BMW PGA Championship

🚩 Location: Wentworth Club

💰 Purse: $9M - 1.53 To First

👑 Previous Winner: Shane Lowry

👀 Watch On: Golf Channel & Peacock

The Fields at a Glance

These two fields couldn’t be any more different. The Fortinet is headlined by two time defending champ Max Homa and Justin Thomas is also in the field and trying to find his form ahead of the Ryder Cup.

Meanwhile, across the pond, the entirety of Team Europe will be competing at Wentworth in the DP World Tours marquee event.

The Courses

Silverado: The Silverado Country Club has been hosting this event since 2014 and there’s one thing we should all expect - a birdie-fest. The average winning score since 2014 is seventeen-under.

Wentworth:  A bit more challenging and a bit longer than Silverado, to say the least. It’s a parkland course (not your typical European links course) with huge trees lining every hole. There’s also water hazards to be found, particularly around the 18th green. Should be a fun event.

Previous Winners at Each Event

Fortinet

2022: Max Homa

2021: Max Homa

2020: Stewart Cink

2019: Cameron Champ

BMW Championship

2022: Shane Lowry

2021: Billy Horschel

2020: Tyrrell Hatton

2019: Danny Willet

Shanks Picks - Fortinet Championship

Like we said above - this should be a birdie fest. The fascinating storyline here is really about Justin Thomas, but we don’t feel confident enough to bet him at the low numbers being offered. As for Max Homa, well, he’s clearly the top dog in the field, but his number is also too short and it’s really hard to win an event three times in a row.

Odds via BetMGM

Outright Winner: Sahith Theegala at +1600 just doesn’t feel like enough juice, so we are going to throw a little on Stephen Jaeger at +2500 instead.

Top Five: Beau Hossler +575

Top Ten: Akshay Bhattia +400

Top Twenty: Doug Ghim +240

Longshot: Justin Suh +6000

Shanks Picks - BMW Championship

While both events have “championship” in the name, the BMW is the only one that actually feels like a championship. With that being said, we’re making our picks with a combination of recent form and total Ryder Cup bias.

Odds via BetMGM

Outright Winner: Nicolai Hojgaard +4000

Top Five: Matt Fitzpatrick +300

Top Ten: Shane Lowry +160

Top Twenty: Sepp Straka +140

Longshot: Jordan Smith +5000

Make The Cut Parlay - BMW Championship

Odds via Fanduel

Viktor Hovland, Rory McIlroy, Jon Rahm, Tommy Fleetwood, Shane Lowry, Matt Fitzpatrick, Ludvig Aberg, Justin Rose, Sepp Straka, Nicolai Hojgaard to all make the cut. +496

Yes, we picked 10/12 players on Team Europe to make the cut this weekend. We’d have picked all 12, but Fanduel wouldn’t allow it.

How Does Fedex Fall Work, Anyway?

Brand spankin’ new to the PGA this year, players ranked from 71-150 will take part in the Fall Series of events to decide who does and doesn't qualify for their 2024 Tour card.

Let’s break this down…

  • Top 50: confirmed their full status on the PGA Tour for the 2024 season + eligible for all 8 of the designated events for 2024.

  • 51-70: confirmed their full status on the PGA Tour for the 2024 season. Can also carry over their FedExCup points for the Fall Series to win eligibility for 2 of the 8 designated events in 2024.

  • 71-125: If they stay in the top 125 by the end of the Fall Series, they are confirmed for full status on the PGA Tour for the 2024 season. Earning more points in the Fall Series could earn them 1 of the 10 spots in the 2nd and 3rd designated events of the season.

  • 126-150: Competing for the top 125 to retain full Tour status for 2024. If they end the Fall Series ranked between 126-150, they will retain conditional tour status.

Through the 7 events, more than $56 million in prize money is available, so more than securing Tour Cards, there’s good money to be won! What’s even cooler is that the winners of fall events are the same as the regular season, including a two-year tour exemption and invites to the Masters, PGA Championship, the Players Championship and Sentry Tournament of Champions.

A fall golf calendar that matters? That’s great right?? So get your q-zips on and tune into some golf this fall, where the weather is cool but the competition is still hot!

Shots Heard Round The World

Monday Q: Leap Of Faith.

Just Do It Already!

Every so often on social media, you’ll get a low handicap dude, who genuinely thinks he can beat an LPGA player.

Every time this happens, tons PGA Tour pros and media member come out of the woodwork and say “No, no you couldn’t”.

The debate rages on in the comment section until people get bored… and then inevitably a few months later some other dude will have the same idea.

So, we say - just do it already! Charley says she’s game.

For what it’s worth: we think she beats the dude by 10 strokes easy.

Golf Thing We'd Buy If We Weren't Broke

From HypeGolf:

Travis Scott must have discovered the joys of golfing from his fellow Jordan Brand family member DJ Khaled, as his olive-and-sail Air Jordan 1 Low Golf caught the eye of duffers and sneakerheads alike when it first leaked back in June.

Now, a release date for La Flame’s link-ready kicks has been revealed. They’re set to touch down on Nike SNKRS — and potentially at select retailers — on October 13, and will likely retail for $170 USD.

Trivia Answer: Curtis Strange. He later apologized.

That’s a wrap, readers. See you Saturday morning.
