Meanwhile, down in Australia, Joaquin Niemann (-6) and Jon Rahm (-5) are chasing Carlos Ortiz (-9) with one round to go.

Quick Update: Genesis Invitational

Davis Thompson (-8) is leading the charge at the Genesis Invitational through 36 holes.

The 25-year-old, who snagged his first PGA Tour win last year, was rolling with six birdies in his first 13 holes before stumbling with back-to-back bogeys. But he steadied the ship, carding a birdie at 16 and dropping a clutch short-range putt on 18 to cap off a solid 66.

Right on his heels? World No. 1 Scottie Scheffler (-7), who posted a smooth 67, and Rory McIlroy (-5), who made a mid-round charge with five birdies in eight holes before a couple of late bogeys slowed him down.

McIlroy bounced back with birdies on 15 and 17 but couldn’t capitalize on the par-five 18th, leaving him three shots back heading into the weekend.

Unfortunately, Jordan Spieth failed to build off of his performance last week at the WM Open. He and Max Homa both missed the cut at The Genesis.

However, there’s still plenty of firepower near the top of the leaderboard, and with Torrey Pines playing tough, it’s anyone’s tournament from here. Should be a good weekend of golf.
