Quick Recap: The Rocket Mortgage Classic

In back-to-back weeks, the PGA Tour has crowned winners under the age of 25.

Michael Thorbjornsen and Jackson Koivun both earned their way onto the TOUR via the PGA TOUR UNIVERSITY program, which, by all accounts, has been a successful endeavor for all involved.

Here’s how it works:

College golf’s top players can earn membership through PGA TOUR University and have a guaranteed place to play immediately after their college careers are complete. The PGA TOUR University Ranking is the mechanism to determine which graduating seniors earn automatic access to PGA TOUR-sanctioned circuits.

After the NCAA D-I Men’s National Championship in May, the top-20 players in the final PGA TOUR University Ranking earn membership on the PGA TOUR (No. 1), Korn Ferry Tour (Nos. 1-10), or PGA TOUR Americas (Nos. 6-20). The PGA TOUR University Ranking is limited to seniors, who may accept performance benefits after the conclusion of their college careers

via PGA TOUR

Maybe it’s recency bias, but it feels like the PGA TOUR’s next generation is arriving all at once.

Koivun made his statement at the 3M Open, and one week later, Thorbjornsen followed with a win in Detroit.

Two PGA TOUR University graduates, two victories, and a pretty convincing argument that the pipeline is working. Not to mention Ludvig Aberg, Luke Clanton, and Gordon Sargent also came through the PGA TOUR U system.

But let’s start with Thorbjornsen’s win at the Rocket Mortgage Classic.

The Rocket Mortgage Classic

Davis Riley started Sunday with the lead, but four bogeys threw the door wide open for a host of contenders at the final edition of the Rocket Mortgage Classic.

The back nine on Sunday was pretty exciting, until Thorbjornsen shut the door.

Rickie Fowler had some chances, but faltered. Xander Schauffele made a long birdie putt, and briefly held the lead, but ultimately finished in 2nd.

At one point, there was a four-way tie for the lead at 15-under, but Thorbjornsen made birdies on the 10th, 12th, 14th, 15th, and then a 26 footer on the 18th to close it out.

He shot 63, the lowest round of the field, and good enough to secure his first PGA TOUR victory at just 24 years old by a margin of two shots.

Parting Thoughts

The quality of the field, mixed with Davis’s early snafu’s, and a renovated Detroit Golf Club made for a pretty fun watch.

One can’t help but wonder what the return was like for Rocket Mortgage, and exactly why they decided to pull out. We don’t know the viewership numbers for yesterday yet, but last year was their most watched event since 2020, and this years product was better.
