Quick Recap: The Open
A few months ago at TPC Sawgrass, most golf fans were questioning whether Xander Schauffele could even win a big tournament, let alone a major. How could someone so talented keep coming up short? Is he a choke artist?
It's not like he was playing poorly—he's been consistently great for the last few years. His results in majors were always respectable, he just couldn’t get over the hump of actually winning one.
The Players Championship was like Groundhogs Day, he couldn’t seem to get the ball in the hole when he needed it most. It was fair for fans to wonder if he was going to end up like Lee Westwood: a wonderful career with no majors.
He talked about being in “a bath of misery”.
That all changed at the PGA Championship, where he played brilliantly on Sunday and edged out Bryson DeChambeau by one shot. Fast forward to yesterday at The Open Championship, and all of that struggle and misery seem to be paying dividends.
He was the absolute best player in the field on Sunday at a major championship, again. A different kind of Groundhogs Day.
Players like Justin Rose (who we were really pulling for) and Billy Horschel played great and have nothing to hang their heads about, but Xander matched their greatness with excellence when it mattered most.
