Charles Schwab Challenge Recap

New TM Driving Iron, Ben Hogans Swing, and more.

Good afternoon and welcome to Caddyshanks, we’re here on this glorious Memorial day to give you all your golf news. My last two brain cells left from the weekend are giving everything they have today.

Here's what we've got for ya today:

  • Quick Recap: Charles Schwab Challenge

  • Early Lines: Memorial Tournament

  • Golf Shots Heard Round The World

  • Golf Fun Fact

  • Golf Thing We'd Buy If We Weren't Broke

Quick Recap: Charles Schwab Challenge

👑 Winner: Emiliano Grillo 1.56M

It was a strange finish to say the least.

The top of the leaderboard faded, Scotty Scheffler made a charge, but it was Grillo who stepped up to seize the lead heading into the 72nd hole.

He arrived at the final hole with a two shot lead, the only thing he couldn’t do was make double bogey.

Only in golf, does your ball land in a shallow, man-made creek, and trickle down for 5 mins until it FINALLY comes to rest and you can take an unplayable.

How absurd!

So, Grillo ends up making double and has to go to a playoff with Adam Schenk.

He goes on to win the playoff, obviously, but I think he gave himself some sort of karmic good luck with this move:

What an incredible thing to do for those two young fans. Right before you are about to go into a playoff to get your first tour win in 8 years.

"It's been such a ride," he told CBS Sports. "Makes me think about where I come from and my family. We had a baby 14 months ago. Life changed, perspective changed. Today I made a double on 18. Honestly, I didn't care. I would have liked to get it on the 72nd. They say the second is harder than the first. It definitely was. I'm on top of the world right now. Hopefully I can stay there another week."

What about everybody else?

Scottie Scheffler: Wrap your head around this, mere mortals. The world No. 1 and ball striking madman cannot make a putt. “The hole looks small, that’s about it.” he said after the round. We’re confident he will figure it out.

Adam Schenk: He was seeking his first tour win, but missed birdie opportunities to close it out in regulation and in the playoff. Still walked away with almost a million bucks and a solo 2nd.

Jordan Spieth: Missed the cut. Never missed the cut once in ten previous starts, but MISSED THE CUT. We are putting a ban on betting him until he earns his way out of the Caddyshanks Gambling Doghouse.

Shanks Picks: SWING AND A MISS.

Early Lines: Memorial Tournament

This week, the Tour is headed to Jack’s place (Muirfield Village) for an elevated event. Not only does that mean big money for the winner, but The Memorial Tournament is one that the pro’s really care about winning. There’s a certain kind of clout that comes with winning at The Goat’s Course.

A few notes…

Billy Horschel is the defending champion, and he may be worth a long shot bet, but he has not been playing his best golf this year.

We have the entire top-6 in OWGR competing. Scottie Scheffler, Jon Rahm, Rory McIlroy, Patrick Cantlay, Xander Schauffele and Viktor Hovland.

Looking back at previous winners, you have a good mix of elite talent and dark horses. We will do the usual deep dive on Wednesday.

Golf Shots Heard Round The World

Another Hole in One: Yesterday, Scotty Scheffler hit a hole in one. Thats one way to overcome a cold putter.

LACC Preview: The Fried Egg will be doing a preview of this years US Open location on Wednesday. More details here.

Steve Stricker Wins Again: His second straight senior major, but this time he had his teenage daughter caddie. Pretty cool.

Impaled Foot: A College golfer had to drop out of tournament play this weekend, because a wooden tee impaled his foot.

Ben Hogan Swinging

Here’s just 46 seconds of Ben Hogan having a perfect golf swing.

Golf Thing We'd Buy If We Weren't Broke

Good lord, just look at it. A driving iron most people couldn’t make solid contact with in their wildest dreams, and it’s gorgeous.

The TM Stealth Bomber Driving Iron even comes with its own headcase.

That's all folks! See you Wednesday where we'll make some picks for The Memorial Tournament.
