Quick Update: Rocket Mortgage

The birdie-fest is rolling in Detroit and, as predicted, the leaderboard is a mishmash of big names, up & comers, and guys you may have never heard of.

In fact, the two leaders are Peter Kuest, a Monday qualifier, and Taylor Moore, a one time PGA tour winner. Peter is the 789th ranked player in the world.

What about the rest of the leaderboard?

Collin Morikawa : It’s kind of hard to believe that this dude hasn’t won since 2021, but thats golf. Of course, he totally burned us last week, and we put the gambling ban on him for a month. That didn’t stop him from cruising to an easy -6 yesterday.

Rickie Fowler: Every week, you wonder if he’s gonna run out of steam. Yet every week, he reminds us that the BDR comeback tour is still going strong. He hasn’t won on tour since 2019, its gotta happen sometime soon, right?

💰 Shanks Picks 💰

Last week, Collin Morikawa screwed up the card with an opening round of +4, then yesterday, despite all our positive vibes about him, Justin Thomas did the same thing. Single handedly ruining our Make The Cut parlay, as the current cut line looks to be -2.

Here’s how our picks from Wednesday are doing + a weekend bet:

Winner: Ludvig Aberg came out swinging yesterday, no pun intended. He hit every single fairway and made 17/18 greens in reg. He was -9 and then bogeyed his final two holes. He can win this thing and make us rich.

Top Five: Justin Thomas is dead in the water here, but we will cheer our asses off for him to make the cut.

Top Ten: Justin Suh was +700 when we made this bet, and he’s -7. Great start.

Top Twenty: Aaron Rai is also -7 and also off to a great start.

Long Shots: Austin Eckroat ain’t winning this thing.

Make Cut Parlay: Justin Thomas, Ludvig Aberg, Austin Eckroat, Aaron Rai, Rickie Fowler, Tony Finau, Brian Harman, and Gordon Sargent to all make the cut. +1174 Fanduel.

Justin Thomas and Austin Eckroat are jeopardizing the parlay here. They are on official “Cut Watch”.

Weekend Bet: Sam Bennet +2500 via Fanduel

Players Pushback on Lynch

Remember last week, when we shared about how long time golf writer Eamon Lynch destroyed Patrick Cantlay? Well, apparently a few players didn’t appreciate that too much.

So far, thats Willy Z, Adam Scott, Justin Thomas, and Rickie Fowler all speaking out against Lynch.

Golf Shots Heard Round The World

Good Morning Football: Sara Walsh from GMFB went on an unhinged rant yesterday about how she’s a disgruntled golf spouse, or something. If I were her husband, I too would steer clear of the house while she’s home.

The Match: Could there have been any less hype for this event? Get professional golfers involved, because who wants to watch Klay Thompson taking drops from the woods? Anyway, there were at least two gems from Charles Barkley, who was commentating:

“Draymond talks a lot for a guy that ain’t got no job,” and

“When I’m playing, I always try to pick out a target: Earth.”

Nick Faldo Says: Nobody is really interested in LIV Golf.

LIV Espana

All the way out in beautiful Espana (that’s Spain for you uncultured swine) at the Real Club Valderrama, we have our latest LIV Golf tournament that has… well by the time you’ve read this, it’s already happened. The golfers all teed off at about 4:15am Pacific and since it’s a shotgun start, they’re definitely done and relaxing under that beautiful sun.

I can only surmise that the power rankings are somewhat correct…

Individual:

  1. Sergio Garcia (Fireballs GC) – Has 15 career starts at Valderrama and has 14 top-10 finishes on LIV Tour.

  2. Cameron Smith (Ripper GC) – Six consecutive top-10s.

  3. Brooks Koepka (Smash GC) – Other than the US Open, he’s clearly on fire with a PGA Championship win and LIV Tour win.

  4. Dustin Johnson (4Aces GC) – Not sure why he’s here. Played well BUT never finished inside the top 5 in points in any LIV tournament played outside the U.S.

  5. Harold Varner III (RangeGoats GC) – Won the most recent LIV Tour event in Washington DC.

Team:

  1. FIREBALLS GC. – See Sergio Garcia.

  2. TORQUE GC. – The only team with two tournament wins this season.

  3. RANGEGOATS GC. – Four consecutive podium finishes.

  4. 4ACES GC. – In the mix on the podium literally every single LIV Tour event.

Feel free to tweet at me (@chase_majerus) to let me know just how wrong these power rankings are LOL! I know that my butt will be in the gym at like 6am Pacific so I’ll definitely be watching on my phone!

Pure, So Pure.

If this was me, that dude in the black and white striped shirt would need to be wearing protective gear.

Golf Thing We'd Buy If We Weren't Broke

Yes, I know. I literally talked about wedges on Wednesday. But this is different, it’s literally on theme. Callaway announced a dope giveaway on their Instagram where you could win a set of custom wedges designed by @anthony.taranto.

I say COULD because the giveaway is over already but that isn’t stopping me from wanting some of these beautiful USA themed JAWS raw wedges. They’re so sick. ‘Merica. I don’t know the price of something like this, but I do know that anything Anthony Taranto is very expensive and on a very long and exclusive waiting list. Celebrate safely this 4th of July and hit your greens in regulation so you don’t have to pull out your wedges at all!

That's all folks! Go low this weekend.
