Grayson Murray, Addiction, and Mental health.
Letter from the editor.
This weekend, Grayson Murray tragically took his own life.
He battled alcoholism, addiction, and depression. He was open about it.
These are topics I know well. I’m also a recovering alcoholic.
It runs in the family on both sides.
My mother has been sober for over 15 years. My paternal grandfather passed away with over 25 years of continuous sobriety. We all went to the same rehab.
My mom likes to joke “Some families have Harvard, we’ve got The Caron Foundation”.
Through the grace of a power greater than myself and the kindness of strangers, friends, and family - I haven’t had a drink since February 12th, 2011.
Chances are, you know someone just like me and just like Grayson Murray.
Every one of us has an alcoholic in the family or in the extended friend group.
Many alcoholics and drug addicts suffer from mental health issues as well.
Maybe that person is you.
Here’s the point: If you, or someone you know, is struggling with addiction and mental health issues - I am happy to help. For fun and for free. I was taught that if you want to keep something, you’ve gotta give it away, so please feel comfortable reaching out.
If you’re reading this, know that there are solutions out there.
You can email me any time: [email protected] or reach out to me on Twitter as well.
I sit on the board of The Caron Foundation. They have multiple locations across the country. They have open beds. They do great work and they work with a variety of insurance providers.
In the meantime, check in on your friends and loved ones. You never know how impactful a text or call can be.
