A weekend bet, a golf conman, and more golf news.
Good Morning. Welcome to Shanks. Last Friday, you fine readers voted to move the Friday email to Saturday. So, here we are. Sucking down some coffee and talkin’ shop.
Did You Know? Before Tiger, the last player to reach a total of seven major championships was Tom Watson in 1982. Who’s gonna be next?
Here's what we've got for ya today:

Quick Update: Fedex St. Jude
Rounds 1 & 2 Recap
Lucas Glovers win last week on the back of his L.A.B. Putter was pretty cool.
The wild part - he entered the week needing a top two finish to even qualify for the playoffs…
All to say, we didn’t think we’d see his name on the top of the leaderboard two weeks in a row. Definitely not in this stacked of a field.
But you know what? It doesn’t matter how stacked the field is when your pouring in putts left and right like Lucas Glover. He made three putts on Friday that were over 25 feet. He is +750 to win.
What about everybody else?
Jordan Spieth (-9): Ummm… Is Jordan Spieth back? Like 2015 Jordan Spieth? It feels like he might be back. We could watch that dude spin wedge shots all day, man. Spieth is +650 to win.
Tommy Fleetwood (-8): You love to see our top-5 pick from Wednesday continuing his streak of great play. Now, he’s notorious for not being able to close the deal on Sunday’s… will that change? He’s currently T3 with Sungjae Im, Taylor Moore, and Emiliano Grillo. Fleetwood is +1000 to win.
Scottie Scheffler (-7): Woah! Putter woke up. Scottie is 15th in SG: Putt so far this weekend, but dropped to 45th in SG: App. Isn’t golf stupid? If he gets the approach play dialed to normal levels…look out. +550 to win.
Rory McIlroy (-7): Uh-oh! Putter fell asleep. McIlroy missed three putts inside 10-feet and another three from 10-15-feet on Friday. Maybe Scottie can give him a tip…+650 to win.
Max Homa (-6): Max made a big push on Friday, firing off a 66. He is +3500 to win.
💰 Shanks Picks 💰
Quick Card Review:
Our outright pick (Tyrrell Hatton ) and our longshot (Brian Harman) really didn’t do the card any favors with slow starts on Thursday. However, they both battled back Friday and finished T46 at -1.
Tommy Fleetwood is carrying the card. The Tom Kim Top 20 play is also looking safe so far.
Sam Burns to finish top ten is actually looking like the worst bet we’ve ever made. If you followed this bet on our advice, reply to this email so we can personally apologize to you. Holy sh*t! What a miss!
Weekend Bet: Sungjae Im +1400. He currently ranks 2nd in SG: T2G.
True Crime, But Golf
If you thought that Phil Mickelson gambling a billion dollars in his career was absurd, wait until you read this story. The true story of a golf pro's lies, fraud, threats and tales of murder, that is.
“One year ago, Chason Perry needed help. His gym in Columbus, Ga., was growing, and golf was a natural extension. Perry already had success working with high school athletes who went on to receive Division I college scholarships in football and baseball. But golf presented two problems: Perry’s 26,000-square-foot building did not have a formal golf space; and Perry, a former tactical specialist in the Army and Air Force, didn’t know enough about the game. He required someone who could run the golf program, and whom parents and kids could trust.
Now, Perry tries to understand how the person he trusted tore it all down and ended up in handcuffs.”
Golf Shots Heard Round The World
Not Just Anxiety: Jay Monahan has a problem.
LIV Bedminster: Cameron Smith shoots 66, leads field.
It’s Iron Season
We’re moving the irons and club releases out of the “Things I Would Buy If I Wasn’t Broke” section because there is just TOO MUCH happening, and we want to cover it all!
Currently at the top of the list of most recent and massively hyped club release, the TaylorMade P790.
Price: $1,399 (steel/7-piece set) and $1,499 (graphite/7-piece set)
Club Range: 3-iron through Attack Wedge
Stock Shaft: True Temper Dynamic Gold 105 and Dynamic Gold 95 steel or Mitsubishi MMT graphite (55A, 65R, 75S)

TaylorMade didn’t exactly release a “hype video” but rather an in depth look at the testing of these absolutely beautiful irons. You can check that video out here.
