Coming Soon: PIF + PGA Deal

Good Morning. Welcome to Shanks. The Players Championship is in 59 days. The first major of the year, The Masters, is in 86 days. Not quite as cool, but still cool, the PGA Show is at the end of the month and we will be there. We’re pumped to report back on all the new golf gear coming out in 2024.

Golf Joke: A professor is giving a lecture to his medical students on human anatomy and involuntary muscle response. He turns to a woman in the front row and says "for instance, do you know what your asshole is doing when you're having an orgasm?" To which she replies "probably out golfing with his buddies."

Here's what we've got for ya today:

  • Quick Update: The Sony

  • Coming Soon: PIF + PGA Deal

  • Shots Heard Round The World

  • Sponsor Exemption Gets Roasted

  • Thing We’d Buy If We Weren’t Broke

Quick Update: The Sony

A True Contender in Oahu

Carl Yuan is in contention at the Sony Open, in fact, he’s tied for first.

That’s pretty remarkable considering he only got into the tournament because Jon Rahm left for LIV.

Carl is 9-under along with with Austin Eckroat and Byeong Hun An.

Also, the dude is pretty damn entertaining and kind-of a goofball out there, which just makes us like him more.

If you’re really feeling Carl, BetMGM has him available at +2200.

Chris Kirk Looking To Go Back 2 Back

Just as we expected, Chris Kirk is still pretty dialed after his win last week. He sits at 8-under through two rounds and has a serious chance at completing the Hawaii Double.

He’s demonstrated an ability to close out tournaments, where the three guys above him have not, yet.

What About Everybody Else?

We’ve got all the makings of a great finish on Sunday, with three guys tied for first at 9-under and ten guys T4 at 8-under.

The 8-under group includes; Ben Griffin, Stewart Cink, Cam Davis, Cashmere Keith, Taylor Montgomery, Kurt Kitayama, Chris Kirk, and Grayson Murray.

There is one special name at 7-under: Akshay Bhattia, who was our pre-tourney longshot pick at +6000.

Shanks Picks

Two weeks in a row, two pretty decent cards.

Outright Pick: Chris Kirk is currently T4.

Top Five: JT Poston is T38, four strokes out of the Top-Five. He’s got some work to do.

Top Ten: Si Woo Kim is T26 and has a legit chance to be a top ten hit.

Top Twenty: Corey Conners, we ask so little of you in this position, and two weeks in a row you will likely let us down.

Longshot: As mentioned above, Akshay Bhatia has a legit chance at winning this thing at +6000 pre-tourney odds.

MTCP: Matt Kuchar failed the make the cut. 0-1 on the MTCP for the season.

Coming Soon: PIF + PGA Deal

Keith Pelley Is Out At DP World Tour

The announcement was made earlier this week that DP World Tour CEO Keith Pelley would be leaving his post to take a new job as CEO of Maple Leafs Sports and Entertainment LTD.

His choice to leave, during the height of PIF / PGA talks, raised eyebrows.

Says Deal Could Get Done Before He Leaves

“I am here for the next three months, and by then we hope to come to a conclusion, and I’ve told the PGA Tour and representatives from PIF that is my primary focus,” Pelley said at the Dubai Invitational. “I truly believe (a deal can be completed). I’ve believed it for a long time, and that is the reason that we entered the framework agreement—and we need to move forward.”

Shots Heard Round The World

This is hilarious. After shooting an 87 in the opening round of the Dubai Invitational, many people were curious about just who the hell this Ken Weyand guy is…

Turns out, he’s a close friend of Michael Jordan, and director of golf at The Grove, which is the super exclusive course MJ built that none of us will ever get on.

Wanna learn more about how this guy got into the tournament?

Thing We'd Buy If We Weren't Broke

For a lot of players across country, the weather might not be suitable for golfing yet. But that doesn’t mean that you shouldn’t take advantage of the deals NOW, while you can, that will ultimately have a positive impact on the way you play the game.

This is Arccos. A sensor (placed strategically in your golf grip) that syncs to you an award winning app on your smartphone. With this technology, you can acquire the data you need to:

  • Get precise yardages

  • Know how far you hit every club

  •  And ultimately, play with more focus and confidence

That’s all folks! See you Monday.
