3M Open Bets, Scottie Can't Putt, and more.
Good afternoon. What happened to golf movies? You know, classics like Tin Cup, Happy Gilmore, and Caddyshack? The people are way overdue for a great golf movie. Both Happy Gilmore and Tin Cup came out in 1996 for goodness sakes!
Trivia: Who was originally offered the role for Shooter McGavin, but turned it down? Answer toward the bottom of today’s email.
Here's what we've got for ya today:

Doin Lines: 3M Open
The majors are over, but the Fedex Cup Playoffs and Ryder Cup are just getting started. There’s plenty of golf left this season.
Let’s boogie.
🚩 Location: TPC Twin Cities
💰 Purse: $7.8M - Winner gets $1.4M
👑 Previous Winner: Tony Finau
⛳️ Field: 156
👀 Watch Schedule: Golf Channel, CBS, ESPN+
The Field at a Glance
The field for the 3M is going to be better this year than in previous years. Why?
Because theres only a couple events left until the Fedex Playoffs begin and this year only 70 guys make the playoffs instead of 125.
In addition to that, you’ve got top names like Tony Finau and Justin Thomas vying for a spot on the Ryder Cup team in Rome.
Six top dogs will be in the field; Tony Finau, Cameron Young, Justin Thomas, Sungjae Im, Sepp Straka, and Hideki Matsuyama.
The Course
This quote from tournament founder Hollis Cavner sums TPC Twin Cities up pretty nicely:
“We want birdies and train wrecks, and we don’t want to be the hardest golf course on the tour.”
💰Shanks Picks💰
Outright Winner: Sepp Straka +2200. The big man is on a hot streak right now. Can he keep it up?
Top Five: Cam Young +360. He’s coming off a nice performance at The Open and while he hasn’t been able to close the deal just yet on tour, we think he finishes near the top again this week.
Top Ten: Kieth Mitchell +490. Cashmere Keith has the game necessary to turn in a good performance at TPC Twin Cities.
Top Twenty: Lucas Glover +230. Another player who has played great golf recently.
Long Shot: Sam Bennet +12000. If you can play well at Augusta, you can play well anywhere.
Make The Cut Parlay: Cam Young, Tony Finau, Hideki Matsuyama, Sepp Straka, and Ludvig Aberg. +255 at Fanduel.
Can we make two cut parlays in a row?!
Scottie Can’t Putt
There’s been a ton made of Scottie Scheffler’s putting woes. We’ve mentioned it in this newsletter a bunch of times, every golf journalist has mentioned it, hell, Scottie has even talked about it.
It ain’t no secret the flat stick is holding him back…except Scottie seems to think it’s just a media narrative. He will start dissecting the cup eventually.
“I think I had back-to-back tournaments [recently] that I could have won where I putted poorly, and all of a sudden it became this [narrative] where I'll watch highlights of my round, and even the announcers, any time you step over the putt it's like, ‘Well, this is the part of the game he struggles with,’” Scheffler said. “If you say it every time and you guys [media] see me miss a 12-footer it's like, ‘Oh, there it is. He's struggling again.’”
The data says:
While Scheffler ranks inside the top 10 in five of the six strokes-gained categories, he’s a lowly 138th in SG: Putting. He might be the best player in the world with irons and woods in his hands, but with the flatstick, he’s not even close to Tour average.
It turns out, Scottie has only had one season where he cracked the Top 60 in SG: Putt. That just so happened to be the year he won The Masters.

FAIRWAYS ARE OVERRATED!
Unfortunately, many players evaluate how they are hitting their driver based on how many fairways they hit.
They should stop doing that.
FAIRWAYS HIT: GREAT vs BAD Rounds
When a 10 handicap plays really well, they hit an average of 7.1 fairways.
