Quick Update: The Zurich Classic

Zurich Classic Leaderboard via ESPN

Irishmen on Top

Rory McIlroy and Shane Lowry were the favorites heading into the Zurich Classic and so far it looks like Vegas was right.

I guess you can’t build those big buildings on the strip unless you’re right more often than not.

Anyway, the dynamic Irish duo played their way to a 2-under 70 in Friday’s alternate shot round, climbing to a shared lead at 13-under at the midway point.

The leaderboard is tight at the top with McIlroy and Lowry tied with teams Rai-Lipsky, Novak-Thompson, and Brehm-Hubbard.

There’s in a six-team cluster one shot behind the leaders for second place.

  • 2022 Champs Xander Schauffele and Patrick Cantlay are T5 (2nd place).

  • Last year’s winners Hardy and Riley are hanging in there, five shots back and hoping for a turnaround.

What about everybody else?

Will Zalatoris and Sahith Theegala missed the cut. A lot of people had them picked to win.

Of the three sets of brothers competing, only one set made the cut: The Fitzpatrick Bros.

The Coody Brothers and the Hojgaard Brothers didn’t make the weekend.

Saturday Live Bet

The Fitzpatrick brothers are only three back and are +4500 on Fanduel right now.

Rahm & Hatton Could Still Be In Ryder Cup

Jon Rahm and Tyrrell Hatton have received a Ryder Cup lifeline.

Despite fears that their move to the controversial Saudi-backed LIV Golf would bar them from participating, the European duo has been given the green light, kinda.

This update comes thanks to the DP World Tour's new chief executive, Guy Kinnings.

In an interview with the Guardian, Kinnings, who recently stepped into his role, emphasized that there's been a major misunderstanding about whether LIV golfers could participate.

He confirmed that as long as players like Rahm and Hatton are members of the DP World Tour and comply with the existing rules—including settling any outstanding fines and participating in at least four events—they can indeed aim to compete in New York in 2025.
